Is BitTorrent Sync a good idea?
Two days ago, BitTorrent announced
a new piece of software called BitTorrent Sync.
BitTorrent Sync is basically a program with which you can sync files/folders
within multiple systems securely (I assume the transfer is encrypted and what-not).
However, the main advantage of cloud services, is not only the fact
that you can sync files all over your devices, it is the fact that you have access
to your files wherever you are.
This also means that if I go on a vacation, take a laptop with me
and suddenly realize I didn’t take a really important project I have to finish
by the end of the month, DropBox servers have it on them because my desktop synced (uploaded the files) with them.
However, if my desktop is turned off (which makes sense because i’m on a vacation),
I’m basically screwed.
Synchronization between devices is a nice option and all, but the main advantage about
the ever growing cloud computing era is that I can go anywhere and still be able to access my files, even if my PC at home is off.
There’s however a big disadvantage with the current way of cloud computing.
That is: you’re basically giving all your files to these major corporations.
This is probably one of the main reasons this piece of software was developed,
to grant you the sole access to your files, thus eliminating 3rd party.
It might also be easier for novice users to eliminate 3rd party companies
without having to play around with things like OpenStack or installing Apache,
to simply install BitTorrent Sync instead.
The program is still in the Alpha stage, and they’re looking for testers,
So if you want to test BitTorrent Sync, you’re more than welcome.
